Sleeves are up, new stuff is coming

It’s been a while since Goplan has seen major updates, but don’t think we’ve been sitting on our hands and sipping piña colada.

Since the survey we sent out last September, we’ve implemented some quick simple things and solved some of the most common problems, but that wasn’t everything we did. We’ve thought long and hard about some of the changes you guys asked for and about the quality of current product. We don’t like to simply make things, we want to make things right. Now that ideas have matured and we have a pretty good idea of where we need to go, it’s time to get to work.

You can see the updated product roadmap (which we like to keep public, as we’ve said before) and have a glimpse of what’s coming. Our main priority will be refactoring the current code for speed and ease and then tackle the new features, prioritizing some of the things most of you asked for (company scoped projects, time tracking, etc).

Our goal is to improve your experience, so as always, let us know what you think through our feedback email, the forums or comments to this post. Keep an eye out, updates are coming really soon.

Comments:

Hi. New user here. Any idea when milestones might be available? Thanks.

About time. I cancelled my account with you because you simply didn’t improve the product. it was simply unusable, unfortunately.

Well, that’s good news for us. I have a 6 months subscription and I have considered to not renew it because the lack of updates, some of the requested by several users. That features would be a very good refresh.

It’s great news to hear that you’re still actually alive :) I’m still debating between goplan and basecamp because I really need time tracking support so it’s a relief to hear you guys are still in the running.

Honestly I thought goplan was just another Web 2.0 money shot, a nice release with lots of feedback and communication and feature progress and then suddenly everything goes dark and the project slowly dies as the “newness” and “fun” of making an application wear off and the daily grind of maintenance and support sets in. Your blog has been pretty much dead as of late so I was pretty close to putting goplan in the grownig heap of dead projects.

Anyway, nice to see some life out there, though of course the proof remains to be seen :)

@Eric: we don’t have a specific date for the release of milestones. We hope we get it before the three to four months we have given ourselves to have all features working and available

@Shaw: your last phrase says it all and we will work to make our vision a reality :)

So…. Three or four months to add some of the features on your public roadmap? I love GoPlan’s simplicity, my concern is that it really is behind the times. Basic things like Milestones should’ve been there from the start. I only say this because I care. ;-)

Still no updates. Never saw the skin capability…. AS far as I’m concerned I’m through with this. Not worth it.

@jay: yes, it may seem a lot of time, and it is, but we are going slow on this, also because MANY things will change in the architecture ( to a more RESTful one).

@Andre: as we are changing many things (read above), it will take some time. Meanwhile some minor updates and bug fixes have been made in the current version.

+1 on the skin customization that was mentioned here: http://blog.goplan.info/2007/05/17/coming-soon-customization/

[...] feeling too well” screen a few times. We want to let you know that while we’re building the new Goplan, we haven’t given up on the current [...]

In February, you said 3-4 months. As a developer, I know this question sucks. But, I have to ask: any closer? What’s the window for delivery? Thanks, in advance. And thanks for being more customer focussed than BC. Honestly.

Dave, that question does not suck at all and is more than pertinent. You and other Goplan users have all the right to ask it and know how are we progressing with the update.

We basically finished most of the core system of Goplan and are working on the user interface integration and some of the features related to it.

Currently our aim is to release it by the end of July (or earlier). Some things took more time than expected, others simply needed to be reschedule due to future changes with third-party services. Having a better sense of what is done and what needs to be, this is a realistic prevision.

I’m sorry to say that I will not renew my plan if nothing happens by end of July.. I like your product, but missing still some features that’d make it usable as a client communication tool. I Pretty much only use it for myself or to communicate with tech-nifty persons.
